<image:title>Slow Living - The Beauty of Ordinary Days - There are mornings when I pour my coffee, the sunlight comes through the kitchen window, and for just a moment, everything feels still. Breakfast is cooking. Sourdough toast is on the table. Sausage is sizzling in a cast-iron pan. Little hands reach for another piece of toast while little feet swing beneath the table.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nothing extraordinary is happening. And yet, I don't want to miss it. I think that is what slow living means to me. Not having an empty calendar. Not making every meal from scratch or keeping a perfectly quiet, perfectly tidy house. It means taking the time to notice the life you are already living. Learning to Notice Our world loves hurry. There is always somewhere else to go, something else to accomplish, or something else to look forward to. It can be surprisingly easy to move through an entire day without really being in it. I've found that when I intentionally look for beauty, ordinary life feels different. Pouring my morning coffee. Deadheading the roses. Watering the herbs. Listening to a book while folding family laundry. Cooking dinner while everyone wanders into the kitchen. Lighting candles at the table.</image:caption>

<image:title>Homemaking - The Bread I Make for Our Family</image:title>
<image:caption>Six years ago, one of my closest friends dropped off a jar of sourdough starter, a cookbook, and a promise that it wasn't nearly as scary as it sounded. The cookbook was Artisan Sourdough Made Simple, and she was right. I started making bread, and over the years it has become one of those homemaking skills I genuinely love. I don't make it every week. Some weeks are busy, some seasons are full, and during the summer especially, travel meant my starter spent quite a bit of time living in the refrigerator. But when life settles down and I have the time, I love having a bread-making day. I usually make four loaves at a time, which means that one stretch of work can give us bread for several meals. One loaf goes on the counter, ready for breakfast and lunches, and two or three go into the freezer for later. That's what I love about learning a useful homemaking skill: it doesn't have to happen perfectly or on a schedule to be useful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Homemaking - The Homemaking Skills Worth Knowing - Learn by Doing</image:title>
<image:caption>My mom taught me much of what I know about homemaking. She was an excellent homemaker. Our house was spotless, but she never made you feel like you were going to ruin it by actually living there. There was always room for people, always room for one more, and somehow cleaning never seemed more important than the people in the room. She taught me to cook and bake. She taught me to clean as I went. She taught me to garden and care for beautiful things. But perhaps most importantly, she taught me that homemaking is something you learn by doing. I've taught myself plenty along the way, too. Sourdough. New recipes. Flower arranging. Caring for silver. Propagating plants. Making beeswax candles. Figuring out how to make our home work better for our family. You don't have to know everything. You just have to be willing to learn.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8b927ceef3ce615e01aff2/0118431b-8c1a-4371-a37b-c2497186bfa7/IMG_6582.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Homemaking - The Homemaking Skills Worth Knowing - There are parts of homemaking I genuinely love.</image:title>
<image:caption>I love planning a menu, setting the table, arranging flowers, decorating, and seeing a new bloom in the garden. I love making marinara and meatballs from scratch. I even love the feeling of a freshly cleaned bathroom, although I have yet to develop the same enthusiasm for the actual scrubbing of it. But I've grown to appreciate cleaning differently, too. Cleaning is stewardship. It is taking care of what you have. It is creating an environment where your family can function, rest, and feel at peace. That doesn't mean the house needs to be spotless all the time. It means having habits that keep the house from constantly feeling overwhelming. For us, that looks like cleaning as we go, running the dishwasher at night and unloading it in the morning, keeping laundry moving, putting things back where they belong, and having everyone help. I reset the house after the weekend while the kids are at school, and I try not to let little messes become giant ones. There are crumbs. There are toys. There are dishes. That's life. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is peace. So I often find myself asking: Does your home breed peace?</image:caption>

<image:title>Traditions & Seasons - The Traditions That Make a Family - Every summer, my family returns to the lake.</image:title>
<image:caption>There is barbecue and boating, good food passed from one set of hands to another, and generations of our family gathered together. When the fireworks begin, we watch them sparkle and reflect across the water. Great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, new babies, cousins, growing families. For years, my Papa was part of those summers. I remember him teaching me to fish and sitting with him on the balcony, talking and watching the lake. He isn't there anymore. But the lake still is. And every time we return, those memories come with us. That is the gift of tradition. Traditions give ordinary time weight. They give families something to look forward to, something to hold onto, and memories that can be carried from one generation to the next.</image:caption>

<image:title>Collected Home - Why I Prefer a Collected Home to a Perfect One - I almost walked right past the box.</image:title>
<image:caption>I was at an estate liquidation, getting ready to leave, when I spotted it. Inside were twelve crystal wine glasses. They were my grandmother’s. I was practically shaking. My Nana had started my collection years ago by giving me pieces of her own crystal—glasses and a vase that I still treasure. And somehow, years later, those twelve wine glasses had found their way back to me. Ten dollars. I bought them immediately. For the first week, I drank everything out of those glasses. That is what I love about a collected home. It isn't simply a home filled with beautiful things. It is a home filled with things that mean something.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hospitality - The Art of Hosting: Why Hospitality Is Worth Learning - Hospitality Is Worth Learning</image:title>
<image:caption>I don't think everyone is naturally good at hosting. And I don't think we should expect ourselves to be. Hosting is a skill. There are things you can learn that make having people in your home easier, more comfortable, and more enjoyable for everyone. You can learn how to plan a simple menu. You can learn what can be prepared ahead of time. You can learn how to set a table. You can learn how to make your home comfortable for guests. You can learn how to welcome someone at the door, how to serve a meal without disappearing into the kitchen, and how to keep the evening moving naturally. You can even learn what to do when dinner doesn't go according to plan. Because sometimes the dessert burns. Sometimes you realize you forgot something at the grocery store.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hospitality - The Art of Hosting: Why Hospitality Is Worth Learning - I have always loved the idea that the beautiful things in our homes shouldn't spend their entire lives waiting for a special occasion.</image:title>
<image:caption>Use the good dishes. Light the candles. Put flowers on the table. Open the bottle you've been saving. Make the cake. Wear the dress. Invite people over on a Tuesday. There is something lovely about giving ordinary life a little care. And I don't think that contradicts the idea that our homes don't have to be perfect. Actually, I think the two ideas belong together. We don't need perfection. But we can still have standards. We can still care for our homes. We can still learn to cook well. We can still make an effort. We can still want our homes to be beautiful and comfortable. The difference is knowing why we're doing it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hospitality - The Little Things That Make a House Feel Like Home - Some of the times I have felt most genuinely welcomed into someone's home, I was greeted at the door and practically ushered inside to where everyone else was gathered. Maybe it was the kitchen. Maybe it was a cozy couch. Maybe there was food and something to drink waiting for me.</image:title>
<image:caption>Someone handed me a beverage and conversation started flowing. There was warm music playing in the background. There wasn't a pile of dishes taking up every surface or a messy couch with nowhere to sit. There was space that had been created for me to enjoy. And I think that's what we are communicating when we prepare our homes for people: I care that you are here. I made room for you. This time together is worth preparing for. That preparation can look different depending on who is coming. A dinner party might mean cleaning the house, setting the table, preparing a menu, lighting candles, putting something beautiful on the dining table, and making the evening feel special. Or it might mean your best friends coming over while dinner is already in the oven. You are standing in the kitchen sipping a glass of white wine while someone chops carrots beside you. The kids might still be finishing homework at the table. That is hospitality, too. I don't think hospitality should require perfection. Sometimes we can get so caught up in getting everything right that we miss the whole point. The people.</image:caption>
